What is Claude Cowork?
Cowork is Claude running on your computer, connected to your tools, and doing work for you. It's not a chat. It's an operating system for AI.
ChatGPT vs. Cowork
You already know ChatGPT. It's a chat interface. You type, it responds. Useful, but limited — it can only see what you paste in.
Cowork is different:
| Feature | ChatGPT/Claude Web | Claude Cowork |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Browser tab (in the cloud) | Your computer (your control) |
| Access to your data | Only what you paste | Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Slack, Asana, Figma, etc. |
| Can run on schedule | No (you have to ask every time) | Yes (daily, weekly, hourly — while you sleep) |
| Remembers your style | Only in current chat | Permanently (voice guides, brain docs) |
| Can take actions | No (you have to copy-paste) | Yes (edit files, send emails, update spreadsheets) |
| Speed for repetitive tasks | Slow (you do it every time) | Fast (set it once, runs forever) |
What Can Cowork Actually Do?
1. Access Your Tools
Connect Cowork to Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Slack, Asana, Figma, Stripe, Gusto, and more. Cowork can:
- Read your emails and search Gmail
- Check your calendar and meeting notes
- Access files in Google Drive
- Monitor Slack channels
- Update spreadsheets and databases
- Create documents
2. Run on a Schedule
Set it and forget it. Cowork can:
- Send you a daily briefing every morning at 7am
- Generate a weekly report every Monday
- Monitor Slack for important messages
- Update your database every night
- Draft emails while you sleep
3. Remember Your Preferences
Teach Cowork how you work. It can:
- Learn your writing style and voice
- Remember your priorities and values
- Know what matters to you
- Apply your preferences automatically
4. Build Custom Skills
A "skill" is a set of instructions Cowork follows for a specific task. Examples:
- Auto-draft all important emails based on your voice
- Create a daily digest of what happened in your Slack
- Summarize your week from your calendar + emails
- Track a database of everything you've learned
- Generate a weekly competitive intelligence report
How Cowork Works (The Technical Part)
The Three Layers
1. The Desktop App — Cowork runs as a standalone app on your Mac/Windows. It's not a browser; it's a real application with access to your computer's file system.
2. Connectors — These are bridges from Cowork to your tools. When you "connect Gmail," you're letting Cowork read your email. When you "connect Google Drive," it can access your files. You control what it can see.
3. Skills — These are instructions you write (conversationally with Claude) that tell Cowork what to do. A skill might say: "Every Monday at 7am, summarize the last 7 days of Slack messages and send me an email."
Real-World Examples
Example 1: The Daily Briefing
What you want: Every weekday at 7am, get an email that tells you:
- Your calendar for today
- Important emails you got overnight
- What happened in your key Slack channels
- Your top 3 priorities
With Cowork: Write a skill once. It runs every weekday. You never have to manually compile this briefing again.
Example 2: Auto-Draft Emails
What you want: Cowork monitors your email. When an important email comes in, it drafts a reply based on how you sound, then puts it in your drafts folder for you to review.
With Cowork: You spend 30 minutes teaching Cowork your email voice. It then saves you 5-10 hours a week on email writing.
Example 3: Weekly Intelligence Report
What you want: Every Friday at 4pm, get a report on what your competitors are doing, what your industry is talking about, and what you should know.
With Cowork: Cowork searches the web, reads your sources, and synthesizes it into one report. Automated intelligence gathering.
Why Now?
Until recently, this wasn't possible. AI was too expensive, too slow, too unreliable. Now Claude Cowork is fast enough, accurate enough, and cheap enough to actually run this way.
Which means: the next competitive advantage isn't "can you use ChatGPT?" It's "can you build AI into the fabric of how you work?"
People doing that today are 5x faster than their peers. In 18 months, they'll be 10x faster.
This is that opportunity.
